Dear Librarians and Partners around the world,

2023 was a very productive year at Knowledge Unlatched. We are pleased to share news about the content that will be made Open Access (OA) as a result of the pledges made by libraries during the last year. As in the years past, we remain committed to our goal of making quality Diamond OA content available to researchers and users all around the world without restrictions.

Overall, about 269 books will be made available OA in 2024 as a direct result of the support received from hundreds of libraries throughout 2023. These include 71 new frontlist books from our legacy collection KU Select, which last year focused on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as around 198 books from our various HSS and STEM partner collections. We also contributed to the sustainability of about 60 journals thanks to our Subscribe-to-Open (S2O) partnerships as well as to the sustainability of several platforms and websites hosting blogs, videos, and other scholarly content.

Several of last year’s collections exceeded their targets and collected more pledges than originally planned, resulting in additional content to be unlatched, and we are especially proud of the outcome of the Language Science Press initiative, which received support from well over 100 institutions worldwide.

Despite many libraries continuing to face challenging budget environments, we are happy to be able to unlatch a significant number of scholarly titles thanks to the widespread library support. By the end of this year, KU’s total impact will number around 5000 titles made OA since our 2013 pilot.

Please see below for the expected number of titles to be unlatched in each of the collections we offered last year, but please be aware that changes may still be unavoidable. We will update our records regularly so that you have a full overview of titles and their corresponding status. The MARC records for all new titles will be updated monthly on the KU website.
