The State of Journal Production and Access 2020: Report on Survey of Society and University Publishers | Scholastica | 13 August 2020

This report presents the results of a global survey of 63 individuals working with scholarly society and university publishers managing and producing academic journals in-house, while concentrating on their current journal production and access approaches as well as future priorities.

As this report indicates, around 80% of society or library publishers and university presses deploy Gold Open Access with the usage levels of Green, delayed or hybrid Open Access varying between 25% and 30%. Correspondingly, between approximately 40% and 50% as well as around 30% of respondents have been found to plan to implement transitions to Gold Open Access and Green or hybrid Open Access respectively over the next 3 years. At the same time, identifying a viable business model for sustainably funding the publication of Open Access journals has also been found to be an important concern for 65% of survey participants.
