As this paper indicates, multiple models of Open Access are likely to be needed to accelerate the transition to Open Science in specialized fields of research and practice, such as medicine, especially as the shift in focus of funding and organizational policies from paywall-based agreements to author-facing fees can also be expected to remove barriers to reader access to knowledge, while possibly creating hurdles to its publications for researchers.
