This article identifies the larger trends transforming libraries' roles from those of guardians and supporters of physical book and journals collections to those of agents of digital change across various information exchange and production chains that generate scholarly outputs in multiple forms. This year, thus, has only accelerated the transformation of libraries into the nodes of global knowledge preservation networks, which both places an emphasis on special collections, Open Access and its models and engages these institutions in the process of change in how their resources are managed.
