As this study indicates, across as different academic fields as mathematics and humanities, Green Open Access accounts for the predominant share of articles published by universities worldwide, ranging from single-digit percentage points to almost 100%, even though the median levels vary from around 25% to 35%. Though Gold Open Access follows Green Open Access as the second most important publishing model, its median levels move from approximately 5% to about 20%, despite the presence of few outlier institutions with over 75% or 100% articles published in Gold Open Access.

As concerns cross-regional comparisons, Green Open Access levels demonstrate the largest variation with European and North American universities showing similar median adoption levels of slightly above 35%, Oceania and South America converging at about 30%, Africa at below 25% and Asia at above 20%. In contrast, only in South America does Gold Open Access attain median levels of above 25%, whereas in all other regions this model accounts for approximately twice as smaller share of university-published papers.
