Open Access Books in the Humanities and Social Sciences: An Open Access Altmetric Advantage | Michael Taylor | arXiv, September, 2020

This paper examines the Altmetrics performance of 32,222 books of which 5% are published in Open Access (OA) and of 220,527 chapters, of which only 7% are in OA, based on the information from the scholarly database Dimensions for Social Sciences and Humanities in the period between 2013 and 2016.

While indicating that Open Access is associated with a highly significant visibility advantage for book chapters, this e-print also demonstrates that for some scholarly fields, such as Language, Communication and Culture, Law and Legal Studies and Philosophy and Religious Studies, Open Access books outperform articles in both Open Access and closed access in terms of their altmetrics coverage, e.g., in news and blog articles.
