Based on the questionnaire data from 15 African Science Granting Councils and a report on Open Science in the context of research and development in Africa, this paper explores Open Access support systems for Africa and the challenges they face with regard to collaboration and interoperability.

This article indicates the need for additional research on Open Access in Africa, given the diversity of policies and frameworks that promote Open Science in this continent and its significantly lagging development, such as with regard to open data practices, as compared to Europe, North America and Australasia.
