Crow, Raym, Richard Gallagher, and Kamran Naim. "Subscribe to Open: A practical approach for converting subscription journals to open access." Learned Publishing 33.2 (2020).

This paper argues business models behind Open Access approaches must be sustainable over the long term. As author-facing article processing charge payments can represent a barrier for some researchers, this article proposes the Subscribe to Open (S2O) approach as an alternative Open Access model.

This paper makes a compelling case that the Subscribe-to-Open (S2O) model can represent a viable alternative to charging author-facing fees, due to its cost effectiveness across large subscriber bases, journal-level revenue stability over time and reliance on existing distribution channels. For participating libraries, the S2O models ensures financial sustainability, continued access, organizational transparency, and policy compliance, such as vis-à-vis Open Access mandates.
