As the publication output of Global South countries has grown by more than 250% in less than a decade between 2009 and 2018, it is notable that their overall rates of Open Access model adoption, which stood at around 25% in 2018, had become increasingly similar to those in the Global North. Likewise, the percentage-point share of articles published by scholars from low- and middle-income countries in either Gold or hybrid Open Access has doubled from 9% in 2009 to 18% in 2018. Yet for these countries, Gold and subsidized Open Access have acted as the primary drivers of transitioning to Open Access in this period.
I think it's interesting to see that we can see one very significant user group on the Open Research Library are India, China, Pakistan, Indonesia, etc. next to the US. Especially given that the marketing there is close to zero from our side it clearly shows that researchers there are very keen and able to find suitable solutions that exist within the well-financed publishing industry.
